Is an extra sample of Nutella worth going to jail for? A Burbank man who spent a year locked up for punching a 78-year-old man in the face over free samples of the chocolate hazelnut spread at Costco might be able to answer that question.
NBC Los Angeles reports that the 25-year-old man, who had been locked up since the incident in September 2015, was sentenced to two years in jail for the scuffle, but was immediately released for time served.
According to the Los Angeles Country Sheriff’s Department, county jail inmates receive two days credit for every two days served in jail. That means the younger man had served his time before even being sentenced.
The man pleaded no contest to an elder abuse charge stemming from a Sept. 20, 2015, altercation that occurred when the older man reportedly told him to take just one sample. At that point authorities say the overzealous younger man allegedly punched his fellow shopper in the face.
Authorities at the time said the older man was transported to the hospital with a one-inch cut and swelling to his eye.
