Now that New Yorkers can no longer “inappropriately” use the city’s free WiFi kiosks while web browsing, the agency that runs the program says reports of people monopolizing the spots has dropped 82%. Weird.
LinkNYC also announced that it’s signed up 576,321 users so far, who have engaged in 26 million WiFi sessions at its 400 locations.
The update to its tablet-based web browsing also increased traffic at the WiFi spots by 12%, again, perhaps because fewer people are spending long stretches of time in the kiosks doing things they shouldn’t be.
So what are people using the tablets for if they can’t surf the web? Calling people and looking at maps: LinkNYC just last week folks made more than 21,000 free phone calls, used maps 11,000 times, and accessed 311 (the non-emergency number for city services) more than 4,000 times.
