Last year, the world’s oldest Taco Bell, located in Downey, CA, was facing the wrecking ball. While that eatery was eventually saved and relocated, another long-standing establishment in the city is now facing its own big change. The country’s oldest McDonald’s is about to get a 21st century facelift: a drive-thru.
The oldest surviving McDonald’s, which is actually the third McDonald’s ever built, has gone nearly 60 years with only a walk-up window and outdoor seating, Curbed LA reports.
But that’s about to change as the Downey Planning Commission was asked by the fast food giant’s corporate office to approve plans that would add a drive-thru to the building.
Fox 11 reported earlier this week that McDonald’s decided to submit the plan after determining that the location wasn’t profitable simply because it didn’t have a drive-thru window.
The commission is expected to discuss the plans today.
LA Curbed points out that while the drive-thru addition might be convenient, it would be in contrast to the restaurant’s historical presence. The oddly shaped location includes a large “HAMBURGERS” sign out front with the Speedee mascot.
